Der Ring des Nibelungen

Silkscreen cover and risographic printed booklet, 13 x 18 cm

Der Ring des Niebelungen by Richard Wagner.

The Ring Returns

Brünnhilde emerges from the crowd. She takes the ring and brings it back to the Rheindaughters.
Hagen throws himself into the water to get the ring and the waterwomen drag him down to the bottom with them.
At the edge of the river, Brünnhilde has a pyre built for her beloved Siegfried. She sets the pile of wood on fire and that is the initial spark for the Valhalla fire. She then rides with her horse Grane into the flames.
Through self-sacrifice, love, guilt and suffering, she has matured to become a fully conscious human being. Her example is aimed at the remaining Gibichschung people to resist the previous gods and power relations.

This was a semester projekt at the Illustration Class of the Udk Berlin, under the guidance of Henning Wagenbreth.

Each student developed one booklet based on a scene, in total there were 22 booklets. I chose to illustrate the last scene when Brünhulde takes over the story.
For this projekt I imagined a world like Blade Runner crossed over with 1990s pixelated video games. The graphics were also heavily inspired by ancient Egypt hieroglyphics.
