José “Pepe” Mujica, after spending several years in prison for fighting against the Uruguayan military dictatorship, became a key figure in implementing progressive reforms during his presidency. He is particularly known for policies like the decriminalization of abortion, the legalization of marijuana, and the legalization of same-sex marriage, as well as strengthening trade unions and raising minimum wages. He also gained recognition for his simple lifestyle and donation of a large portion of his presidential salary to charities.
